VITA spells 2009 tax relief
Staff Editorial
Issue date: 1/28/10 Section: Opinion
Wouldn't it be nice to have a free service done for you while also providing students with valuable work experience? That is the opportunity being offered at Kirkwood Community College this tax season.
Kirkwood accounting students have opened their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program to aid students, staff, faculty and area taxpayers in preparing the basic levels of federal and Iowa tax returns. They request that no business, rental or investment income aspects be part of the taxpayer's financial profile.
This is yet another quality service provided by Kirkwood students. Programs like this give students real-world work experience while also providing a legitimate service for customers. Many of Kirkwood's services cost a small fee, but in this case it's free.
Many Americans consider taking the time to file their taxes to be an inconvenience. And considering that this service will not cost anything, local taxpayers should be grateful for this opportunity.
Participants are asked to bring important tax documents such as Social Security cards, a copy of last year's tax return and all statements of income. Also, a free "E-file" service is available through VITA.
Tax-filing assistance is available by appointment on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays through April 15, with the exception of spring break. For an appointment, call 319-398-5899, Ext. 4521, or e-mail VITA@kirkwood.edu
Considering that the VITA program is free, has a convenient schedule and saves taxpayers time while giving students experience, it makes yet another valuable program offered at Kirkwood.
