The former governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, has signed on as a political correspondent for the Fox News Channel. Sounds like a perfect job for her. This way she can sound intellectually inept and completely natural because you'll hear it straight from Fox News.

Only Fox News would hire a political commentator who doesn't know diddly about Washington politics. Finally, she has a place from which she can broadcast her views on how the liberals are ruining America. And being on Fox, the Republican Party's 2008 vice presidential candidate doesn't need to make any sense or use facts.

Few people know, however, that she's been in this line of work before. In 1987, she received a bachelor's degree in communication with an emphasis in journalism from Idaho University. Shortly after graduation, Palin was hired to be a sportscaster for KTUU-TV and KTVA-TV in Anchorage.

After a few years, she was elected to the Wasilla City Council, starting her political career and launching her into a life of servitude for the good people of Alaska until she resigned from office in July because, in her own words, "It's not what is best for Alaska." Not that I disagree with her. It's just that few actually admit it as a reason for resignation.

What's hard to understand is how so many people find her politically viable. Her career as governor was steeped in controversy (she faced two ethics investigations) before she abandoned it for what looks like financial reasons.

So now, whenever I doubt reasons for voting for Barack Obama, I'll turn on Fox News and remind myself of what could have been and what should never be.
