For students who have trouble studying at home, Kirkwood Community College's library has the resources and atmosphere to help them get their studying done.

Library resources include literature, magazines, televisions to view video and computers with Internet and online database access.

According to Genny Yarne, head of reference, students can access the magazine and journal search engines EBSCOhost, First Search and Wilson Web. For reference and eBooks there is CQ Researcher or students may browse the library's catalog.

The library also has access to a new online database called LexisNexis Academic, Yarne said. LexisNexis allows students to view a compiled list of news, legal and business publications about any subject from lawsuits to rock bands. LexisNexis is available to students via the library Web site at www.kirkwood.edu/library.

Yarne said students also can instant-message the library front desk from a computer through the library's Web site for helpful hints on finding information. The staff is available during the library's business hours.

Students also can get help from the library by calling its toll-free number, 1-866-452-8504. For calls on campus, the library's extension is 5697.

This informational arsenal is not confined to campus. Students can access online databases from home, Yarne said. The user names and passwords for some of the databases are available in the library.

Other library resources are available as well. If all the computers in the library are in use, students should ask if they may use one of the library's laptops. In addition, the library lends graphing calculators to students for a $20 deposit, redeemable after the safe return of the calculator.

Spring semester library hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 3 to 8 p.m.
