Kirkwood's Office of Student Life is using Facebook to beef up interest in Eagles Nest, the official student cheering section at Kirkwood sporting events.
"The way that you become an Eagles Nest member is by going online or by going to the Student Life office in Iowa Hall and sign up," said Seth Vander Tuig, Student Life coordinator.
In addition, there are signup sheets at the door of volleyball and basketball games. The Eagles Nest has more than 300 fans on Facebook, but not all fans are members of the Eagles Nest.
You can go on Facebook and search for the Eagles Nest and become a fan, but you have to sign up for Eagles Nest in order to get the free stuff that comes along with being a member. The free items include Eagles Nest T-shirts, foam hats, foam fingers, pompons and banners.
Although being a fan on Facebook does not make you an Eagles Nest member, Facebook still brings a lot of people to the games. Alyssa Tendall, an Eagles Nest member and a Student Life helper, said "when there is an upcoming event, Facebook will send that notification to everyone who is a fan."
Student Life staffers hope that over the next few months Facebook and students will help spread the word about the Eagles Nest.
Membership is free. For more information, go to www.kirkwood.edu/eaglesnest
