What more can you do? That question was posed at a meeting last fall in the wake of the worst flood/natural disaster in Iowa's recorded history. Lucky for Cedar Rapids that Robby Marvin, a 25-year-old AEGON USA employee, was at that meeting and was inspired to do more.
So this past June, in collaboration with friends, family and co-workers, "The Robject" was born. The Robject project is a 12-month endeavor aimed at promoting volunteerism, especially in Cedar Rapids.
Marvin has pledged 365 volunteer hours, as well as 31.2 percent of his annual income (a percentage derived from the number of feet of water at the flood's high point in June 2008) to 12 non-profit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, HACAP and Habitat for Humanity.
Marvin will be telling his inspirational story of volunteerism at 11 a.m. Nov. 17 in Iowa Hall A, B, C at Kirkwood Community College.
The free event is open to the public and is sponsored by the Kirkwood Accounting Club.
In conjunction with the Robject, the club is putting on a non-perishable food drive running from Nov. 17 to 24. All goods will go toward holiday meals for the Madge Phillips Center and the Willis Dady Homeless Shelter in Cedar Rapids.
