Deciding to transfer to another college is a very important decision.

Since Kirkwood Community College is a two-year school, many students intend to transfer to a four-year school. For them, planning is key.

Having your application and transcript sent in on time assures students the earliest chance for orientation and housing, which are the two biggest concerns for students who are moving on, according to Laura Riley, Kirkwood coordinator of the Advising and Transfer Center.

Riley urged Kirkwood students to come to the Advising and Transfer Center and talk to an adviser.

The biggest piece of the transfer puzzle is planning, Riley said. "Many times students come in and are very undecided about what they're going to major in and where they're planning to transfer. The advising center can be really helpful for students," she said.

If you know what your major is and where you are planning to transfer, advisers at the Advising and Transfer Center can also help, said Riley

"Plan ahead," Riley said. "There are some loose deadlines that students should follow. Plan to have your application and transcript in to the college where you plan to transfer by March to April 1, if transferring for the fall semester. If transferring for the spring semester, have your materials in by the second week of November."

Rachelle Setsodi, assistant director of admissions at Drake University, came to Kirkwood's main campus recently to talk to potential transfers. "I would suggest that you work closely with your adviser to look at the different institutions that you're transferring to," she said. "Each incoming institution will have their own transfer policies of how credits transfer."

Overall, transferring to another school is a "pretty painless process. Just come talk to us," Riley said.

If students are planning to transfer but don't know where, they can check the college visit calendar on www.kirkwood.edu/advising to see which schools will be on campus and when. The Web site will also help students keep up to date on the deadlines that are in place.

The financial aspect of transferring to a four-year school is another concern for students. According to Setsodi, the priority deadline for Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA is March 1 each year. The form can be filled out annually by current and anticipating college students to determine their eligibility for federal student financial aid.
