If you noticed a lot of pink at the women's volleyball game against Des Moines Area Community College on Oct. 21, you were not alone.

October is designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Kirkwood Community College Student Life, the Student Senate and the athletic department are raising awareness on campus.

Seth Vander Tuig, Student Life coordinator, said his department helped with promotions, but this year's impetus came from the volleyball team.

"The women's basketball team has held an event on campus the past two years for breast cancer awareness, and this year the women's volleyball team was given the opportunity to participate," he said.

Breast cancer "affects many people," said Kirkwood head volleyball coach Jill Williams. "It was good to see that we had great support and it was about more than just a game."

Vander Tuig said almost $2,000 was raised Oct. 21 and through bake sales during the month.

"Our goal was $500. So we're doing much better than we anticipated. I don't think anyone thought we would rise as much as we did," he said.

He said all proceeds would go to the Side-Out Foundation, a non-profit group devoted to raising funds for breast cancer research and awareness.

According to its Web site, the Side-Out Foundation was established in 2004 by people brought together by their love of volleyball and their desire to fight breast cancer. Its 2009 fundraising goal is $1 million, with 1,000 participating teams and 2,000 high schools and middle schools across the United States.

Another group on campus that supported the Dig Pink campaign was the One-Stop-Shop, the financial and enrollment offices on Kirkwood Hall's second floor.

"Almost the whole floor bought a pink T-shirt and baked goods. They have all been very supportive and they deserve special recognition," said Vander Tuig.
