It's not often I see a movie that drops my jaw every 10 to 15 minutes and makes me feel the discomfort and anguish that the characters in the movie are feeling.

"Paranormal Activity" is a new horror movie written and directed by Oren Peli, a relatively new blood in the movie business. Judging from this first movie, I would say he is off to a great start.

Because it is in limited release in Iowa, there aren't many places you can go to view this movie. Fortunately, the Wehrenberg Galaxy 16 in Cedar Rapids is showing "Paranormal Activity." But no dice for all you minors out there. They will be checking your ID at the door. No children are admitted, even with adult supervision.

The movie is a haunting thriller and has only four characters, five if you include the apparition. The main characters, Micah and Katie, are just getting settled in their new suburban home. Micah is a day trader who has just spent a lot of money on a video camera. His girlfriend, Katie, thinks he is ridiculous for buying it.

The camera is there to capture mysterious things that are happening around the house while the couple slumbers.

The production quality is low, much like "The Blair Witch Project," and the plot is similar, with young adults trying to document something strange.

The main difference is that the way Peli builds the suspense in "Paranormal Activity" is astounding. You're on the edge of your seat the entire time. This classically haunting movie isn't ruined by an overly dramatic plot or over-the- top gore. It is very exciting and keeps viewers enthralled.

The climax, or what I thought was the climax, was sheer craziness. Then it just kept getting better and better, leading to another climactic moment.

I found myself always wondering what could happen next. If you like getting the living daylights scared out of you, see "Paranormal Activity."
