Ignorance is gladly stepping in for knowledge

The next generation is going to be running America before you know it and some members of this society are very worried. People looking down on the younger millennial generation think that we are becoming incompetent gadget mongers. A new nation of insensitive and snobbish, attitudinal problem children working toward pointless goals of material possessions.
Illiteracy is on the rise according to recent studies and more often than not the folks who can read, don't read books or newspapers. They read their Facebook walls, Twitter and Myspace comments. Now people, knowledge is power but some knowledge is much more powerful than others. Knowing that your friends had a crazy night on the town is not more important than knowing whether or not your public servants are doing their jobs to protect your rights.
What could be causing this shift in priorities and psychological behavior? Technology dependency, broken homes, drug use, violence on TV or possibly the evil plot of a government organization with a secret agenda. I don't expect anybody to know what exactly is causing the downward intellectual spiral but the fact of the matter is that something is happening and it has not been contributing to the betterment or our dear America. Kids are spelling their names with text language and incorporating it into their school assignments.
In the last election people voted against their own interests. The American people were blinded by the shimmering promises of silver tongues and worthless news broadcasts. If you cared whether or not Obama was wearing a flag pin you should probably get a life. If you sat back and laughed at the trash talking during the electoral debates you need to read a book about valid arguments and fallacies. It was a formal debate. It was not a, 'yo momma joke fest' on MTV.
The ignorance of people today is borderline sickening. I know there are people talking about universal healthcare or a newscast warning us about missiles being pointed at our beloved free nation. I don't hear them though because I'm listening to my iPod. Then I get in my huge gas devouring truck and commute 25 miles back to my house to check my email and watch American Idol when I should be studying for a test I have the next morning.
