With the temperatures rising, it's nice to escape to a cool, air-conditioned environment to sit back and relax. Luckily, Iowa City offers several options for getting away for some cheap and comfortable entertainment.
The Sycamore and Bijou movie theaters make great places to unwind and cool off. Matinee movie prices range from $6 for seniors and children to $6.50 for adults. There is also a discount for military members. For more information and show listings check out www.marcustheatres.com and www.bijouonline.com.
The Riverside Theatre on 213 N. Gilbert St. offers a variety of live performances from professional and residential entertainers. Over the summer the theater hosts a Shakespeare Festival which runs from June 12-July 12 at City Park on N. Dubuque Street. Tickets are $17 with a student ID and $34 otherwise.
"It is a great deal for students. We will also give students a half price discount if they come a half hour before the show to purchase tickets. All tickets include any seating in the two tiers," explained Nan Martin, patron services manager at Riverside Theatre.
When live music calls, the lighter schedules of summer present a great opportunity to explore many of the downtown area's nightclubs. Thanks to their cheap door charges students can afford to frequent Iowa City landmarks like the Picador (formerly know as Gabe's), at the corner of Washington and Gilbert streets, and the Yacht Club on Linn Street.
Around the corner on Iowa Avenue are the Industry (formerly the Q-Bar), and the Piano Lounge. All of these venues feature an array of local, regional and nationally touring bands and offer numerous drink specials throughout the week.
