Movie 'blue' minds with effects

After I saw "Avatar," my roommates asked me to describe it for them. I said, "Combine 'The Matrix,' 'The Last Samurai' and 'Pocahontas.' " "Avatar," which is being shown in 2-D and 3-D, is set on Pandora, a moon, in 2154. Humanoid natives, called Navi, resist the efforts of humans to mine the moon's reserves of a valuable mineral.

Spring talent awaits performances

The world premiere of a play and guest musicians are among the arts offerings at Kirkwood Community College this semester. "Besieged! Herbert & Lou Hoover in China's Boxer Rebellion," written by Kirkwood staff member Pamela Edwards, will premiere in April in Ballantyne Auditorium.

Graphic communication artfully displays works

Students in Kirkwood Community College's graphic communications, fashion and interior design programs have submitted some of their most memorable works for public display. The works are in the Iowa Hall Gallery through Feb. 19. Complete floor plans made by the interior design students are exhibited.
