H1N1 elevated to Level 1

On Wednesday, Kirkwood Community College officially moved to Level 1 (elevated awareness) in accordance with the college's Pandemic Influenza Policy. According to an announcement in Tempo, Kirkwood's internal newsletter, Melissa Jensen, Emergency Services director said, "The current situation at Kirkwood is no more serious than any place else in the country.

A play for the "Guys and Dolls"

Kirkwood Community College Theatre's production of "Guys & Dolls" is a sure thing. A comedy about New York night life in the 1930s, the musical was adapted for the stage by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows from a short story written by Damon Runyon in 1933.

Goals intact despite aid cut

Kirkwood Community College is feeling the strain of the economic recession. This fiscal year Kirkwood was granted close to $24 million in state aid, 10 percent of which will be taken away because of budget cuts mandated Oct. 8 by Gov. Chet Culver. "Ten percent across the board," President Mick Starcevich said.

Students from 8 high schools can get jump-start on college at new center in Jones County

The Kirkwood Community College Jones Regional Education Center opened its doors this fall to 174 students. Located along Highway 151 in Monticello, the center is on eight acres donated by the Lloyd and Joyce Welter family of Monticello. The center, which began construction in October 2008, is 32,000 square feet and cost a little more than $6 million to build, according to Kristy Black, Jones and Cedar counties director.

If you noticed a lot of pink at the women's volleyball game against Des Moines Area Community College on Oct. 21, you were not alone. October is designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Kirkwood Community College Student Life, the Student Senate and the athletic department are raising awareness on campus.

Transformers vital to campus

Replacing a failed transformer is a lot more complicated than changing a light bulb. That point was driven home to Kirkwood Community College students and instructors when a transformer failed Oct. 9, cutting off power to parts of Benton and Cedar halls and disrupting 28 classrooms.

Dean to teach self-defense class

Starting this coming Sunday, Dean of Students Bob Burnes will be teaching a "Basic Street Self-Defense" course through Kirkwood Community College's Continuing Education Program. Burnes, a Vietnam veteran and martial arts instructor, has earned a first-degree black belt in tae kwon do and a third-degree black belt in goju ryu karate, a strict discipline of a deadly art.

Although the U.S. unemployment rate climbs higher and higher, the health care industry continues to expand as the population ages. "There is always a need in the health science industry. People are always going to get sick," said Danielle Ebaugh, career services coordinator at Kirkwood Community College.

Poor grades? How to get help

It's the middle of the semester and a big paper is due in two days. Your class grade is already a "D" and you can't afford to let it drop any lower. This can be quite stressful but there are ways to deal with it here at Kirkwood Community College. The first thing you should do is talk to your professor, according to academic adviser Laura Riley.
